Tata Consultancy Services CareerHi, I am planning to join TCS. I currently work with Infosys, Pune and has 4 years of experience. Can someone help me with the following questions: 1) How is the work culture at TCS? 2) How are the yearly appraisal done and are they fair? What's the normal increment at TCS? 3) I heard that quite a few people are recently been kicked out of TCS. Is it true? Is it safe to join TCS.
Reviews1-13 of 13 Reviews Hi, I worked with TCS for 5 years. Most of them were pretty good. 1. Regarding work culture - unfortunately I tend to agree with everyone else here.. it depends on the project and the project manager. many projects take on the culture of the client and it reflects very well on the employees within the project too. Otherwise mostly, its a mamoth organization with lots of rules and regulations. 2. There is a half yearly and annual appraisal. For good to very good performers , the appraisals on the whole will be fair and satisfactory. of course, one needs to remember that 20% of a project cannot be rated at A , the highest band. Thats not how performance appraisal in any company works. For average to poor performers, it can be really tough. Unfortunately in many projects , the ratings also depend on the whims and fancies of the project head and who he thinks is most valuable to the project. TCS increments are the lowest in the industry. They normally range from 7.5% - 12% 3. People did get kicked out, but the reasons were for consistent poor performance, based on the ratings of the last 5 years. Hope this helps.
You have already got several responses. Just adding so that it might help someone else. Work Culture: - Sucks! But it really depends on your team and immediate manager. Every project is like individual managers running a show. Nobody cares about anything but keeping the money flowing from clients pocket by hook or by crook. Nobody will care about quality of work, proactive thinking, associate satisfaction, etc. But I would say there are small number of accounts that have good managers and its a pleasure working with them. Mostly it sucks! - Yearly appraisals are the biggest frauds in this company... You cannot reject your ratings. Based on the ratings is bands from A to E. Its awarded at the discreation of the manager. If you are leaving project or account to another you will be given poor band. Everybody wants to go to onsite... so those at onsite are given poor band to compensate those who did not get a shot at onsite. Appraisals, as popularly believed as a performance assessment, has little to do with your performance at TCS. - I dont know about layoffs. TCS does not do that generally. Its a huge and in the sea of people its easy for poor performers to hide. Now what is TCS good at: - If you are fresh out of college... join TCS and get a good break. After 1-4 years of exp... jump to another better company... - If you need transfer to a city of your choice say you got married... then join TCS. Its spread all across India. - Onsite oppurtunity... Want to work with multinationals and earn in dollars with just a few years of exp... TCSs USP for job seekers. Otherwise its a waste of your time. Spend sometime here... when nobody hires you... TCS will and move to a better place.
As far as the projects in which i had worked,work culture was good - but be assured that the work culture is entirely dependent on the project, boss and location.

Review: Normal Increment is very minimal, however incremennts are good at the time of promotion. Appraisals are done reasonably fair. 3) I heard that quite a few people are recently been kicked out of TCS. Is it true? Is it safe to join TCS. Review: Yes. I cannot comment on the safety.
If u have any better opportunity, pls don't go 4 TCS.

TCS is a very nice Co., get you loads of opportunities and respect in the industry... dosn't pay so well but worth the experience...
Its quite tricking question to answer.If u r software engineer with hot skills (like SAP) u land up in good project and have good exposure for onsite as well.

Well its same work like infy. what designation they are offering ? if its ITA then its ok. What they offered you? If you think compare to pune IT market its good then go ahead...later on if u dont like then change it. No big deal. Well TCS is good firm in all maner. regarding work ,all work is always good n learning..its all depent on how you are doing it n taking it. Appraisal is all depend on your work only.

What's the normal increment at TCS? yearly appraisal is good and depends opoun your boss & u. There is a nominal increment every year 3) I heard that quite a few people are recently been kicked out of TCS. Is it true? Is it safe to join TCS. I dont know that news. If you do not work, no company would keep you. TCS is better in that sense. Hope to see you onboard soon :-)
TCS is a good employer, you can join this company any day. Unless you have been asked to join another location and you have restrictions on relocating.
Hi, I was with TCS for almost 36 months. If you are joining TCS talk to your manager regarding the project in which you will be allocated. First check out the nature of job see wether it matches your career aspiration, if so then you can join. If you join TCS without any clear picture you will be lost. TCS is a ocean. My personal feeling is TCS is much better compared to other indian it companies. but drawback is strict policies. there are lot of restrictions when it comes to claims and financial matters. But now a days TCS is paying quiet well. Work culture is good, friendly. Your appraisal will depend on how you work and most important your visibilty in team and closeness to your manager( as in all companies). I was in a time when recessin is at its peak. That time, yes TCS kicked few employees. [ employees which were not doing well]. But as a policy before kicking TCS will give employee a chance to correct, if there is no improvement in his productivity then he will be out. In that matter any co will do that not only TCS. Overall you can join TCS but make sure in which project and nature of job. If you are not sure, ask. If you are joining in Chennai.. then think twice. I hope i answered your questions.
